I Want My Roommate to Reject Me—Without Making Home Weird

HotWife Diaries, November 2026November 2026

Last week, a conversation with my roommate started in the hallway and ended in my room almost three hours later. It was nearly one in the morning. I was the one who finally stopped it, because we both had work the next day. Apparently I can recognize a sensible bedtime more easily than a sensible boundary for a crush.

I share the apartment with two women, and this is the best roommate arrangement I’ve had here. We each have our own room, we get along, and we do things together, including board games and movie nights. I would like to keep all of that. Unfortunately, I’ve also developed feelings for one of them.

She’s smart, thoughtful, caring, and very attractive to me. When she moved in, she had recently broken up with her boyfriend. They tried again a couple of times over the year before ending things for good about two months ago. Now she seems ready to move on, and three men have already asked her out: an old university classmate, someone she met at a Halloween party, and a colleague whose interest surprised her.

Meanwhile, we’ve grown close in the ordinary way people do when they live together. We talk about her studies, our jobs, and whatever happened that day. We joke around. I listened when she was working through things with her ex. Until recently, that all felt comfortably within the roommate arrangement. Then our conversations became more personal, and in the last few weeks I realized I wanted more than friendship.

The late-night conversation would make a lovely piece of evidence if I were determined to build a case. The rest of the evidence is less cooperative. She talks to me about her dates. She has encouraged me to try Tinder, offered to help me meet women when we go out for a drink, and considered which of her single friends might suit me. She even asked whether I was interested in our other roommate. I’m not. My dating prospects have become a small group project, and the person I like is volunteering to coordinate it.

She says I’m great and has repeatedly told me I need more confidence. I don’t particularly think confidence is the issue, but I’m also not getting the flirting, touches, or efforts to arrange time alone that might suggest she wants something romantic. I can’t know for certain without asking. Still, I’m almost certain she sees me as a friend.

If we lived separately, I could ask her out and take a no. Here, she would still have to live with me afterward. I don’t want her feeling uncomfortable in her own home, and I don’t want a friendship I value to become something she has to manage.

I could ask for a date anyway. I could explain that I’ve developed feelings and ask her to make it clear there’s no possibility, while reassuring her that I want to stay friends. Even that careful version could change how freely we talk or make our shared evenings awkward. Or I could say nothing and keep being her friend, hoping the crush fades rather than deepens while she dates other men.

Nothing has been said yet. For now, she’s offering to help me find someone, and I’m trying to decide whether to tell her why that isn’t helping.
