He replied right away. After about two years without a conversation, I sent him a message asking where to go out that evening, and there he was: joking with me and offering suggestions, even while he was out with friends. It was an easy exchange. Then it ended, and I started wondering whether I could send another message without coming across as pushy.
I'm 24, and so is he. Around four years ago, we spent time together through mutual friends. I liked him a lot. He was kind and considerate, and I felt a chemistry that has stayed unusually clear in my memory. I thought the attraction went both ways. We never dated, though, and he never asked me out. That leaves a fairly large gap between what I remember feeling and what I actually know about his interest.
After that, I was in a relationship for three years. It ended a few months ago. While I was with my boyfriend, this other man occasionally contacted me with an inside joke. The last message came in 2024, when he was abroad and using another number. I read it and didn't reply. I loved my boyfriend and was committed to him; I wasn't trying to keep an old possibility waiting in the background.
From his side, of course, the visible part was a message left unanswered. I don't know what he made of that. Now I'm trying to interpret his silence after an exchange in which my own replies were friendly but short. My last contribution was a comment, not a question. The conversation had somewhere perfectly ordinary to stop, and it stopped there.
We haven't seen each other in almost three years. That's enough time for the person in front of me to be different from the one I've kept thinking about. I haven't felt quite that same spark with anyone else, which makes the memory precious and also gives it a lot of work to do. Part of my interest is in him. Part is the fear that something I felt so strongly might have been a one-time opportunity I let pass.
What I want now is small enough to fit into a straightforward invitation: coffee, and a chance to get to know each other again. I think he's single, but we haven't discussed it. I don't even know whether he knows my relationship ended. My recent message asked for recommendations for a night out. It didn't tell him I was available, or that I was hoping to see him.
Still, asking again feels more exposed than it sounds. His quick reply was warm; it wasn't a date invitation. His lack of a follow-up might mean he isn't interested, or it might simply reflect the conversation we actually had. I can see the difference between offering coffee and repeatedly pursuing someone who's said no. Somehow, with this particular man, one invitation still feels capable of making all my interest obvious.
I haven't invited him yet. For now, the last message is still my friendly comment, and the coffee is still only something I'd like to ask him about.
