They had been together since college, married for three years, and, by her account, doing well. At 26, she shared a home, a dog, and a job at her husband’s father’s business with her 28-year-old husband. They had weekly dates, divided chores, watched movies together, and still wanted children someday—just not until he was in his thirties. Their interests didn’t have to match: she went to book club and had recently taken up running, while he liked golf and football games. They had a life that felt shared without being identical.
Then, around May, he began asking about an open relationship. Her first answer was no. Later, she reconsidered on her own, read about the subject, and talked online with people who had tried it. By the end of June, she agreed. They set six rules, including prioritizing their marriage, being honest, avoiding mutual friends, keeping each other safe, not bringing dates home when the other was there, and leaving their phones open.
At first, he found someone faster. She wasn’t especially curious about the details of his dating, she later admitted. Over time, she herself had more success meeting people. Her dates did not always become relationships; some connections were casual, and she said she didn’t sleep with everyone she met. What she understood about his dating life was less certain. He began going out less, and she took that as a sign he might not be having much luck. She didn’t know for sure.
By August, she was noticing comments that felt sly when she got ready for dates, along with incidents she experienced as attempts to make leaving harder. One evening, she planned to grocery shop before a date and asked him to shower while she was out, since he often took long showers. When she returned about half an hour later, he was still in the locked bathroom, with the water running. She couldn’t tell whether he had been showering the whole time. In a later clarification, she said he stayed in there for roughly two more hours.
The smaller tensions eventually became a fight. He said she was spending more time out than with him. She disagreed: they worked together, still had weekly dates, did chores side by side, and watched movies in the evenings. Their sex life, she said, had not suffered. After she laid out those parts of their routine, he told her he no longer wanted an open relationship. The argument went on for hours. Then he gave her a choice: close the relationship or lose him.
She asked whether he had wanted openness for a particular reason. As she reported it, he denied having a specific motive. He had wanted to try it, he said, and now he was uncomfortable. She was left wondering whether he had expected to make more use of the freedom than she would, but that remained her suspicion, not an answer he had confirmed.
Since the ultimatum, she hasn’t been with anyone else. She wants to stay married; she describes him as her best friend. But she has come to love the open dynamic, and the thought of giving it up feels like more than a temporary inconvenience. She knows she wants the marriage. She is still unhappy with what staying in it may require.
