My boyfriend may have found the little house he wants. He hasn’t viewed it yet, and I’m already wondering whether there would be room for me. Not for a visit. For my clothes, my belongings, and an ordinary shared life.
We’re both in our mid-fifties and have been together for almost a year. We love each other, enjoy our time together, and are happy as a couple. This isn’t a house search happening in the middle of a failing relationship. That’s what makes it so difficult to explain why a property purchase could end it.
He’s selling his current place and wants a house he can feel at home in. We live in a major city where even a small one-bedroom property costs a fortune. A larger apartment might give him more space for the same money, but he wants a house, with the independence that means to him. I understand the appeal. I also understand that the place he’s considering looks barely big enough for one person, before his furniture, books, and enormous record collection move in.
There’s a reason he’s reluctant to compromise. He bought his current property partly with a previous partner in mind. She later moved abroad, the relationship ended, and he has spent years somewhere he doesn’t particularly like. I don’t want to become the reason he makes another choice he regrets.
And he hasn’t simply ignored the idea of living with me. He found a slightly larger house he thought we could share, but that fell through. He looked for two-bedroom homes and tried stretching his budget. The suitable places were too expensive. I offered to contribute toward something bigger, but he feels it’s too early to combine our finances. I respect that. Loving someone for almost a year doesn’t make a joint property purchase a small step.
His suggestion is that I stay with him for long stretches, keep some things there, and carry on renting my own place. He has also looked into extending the house, though that seems financially impractical. He’s trying to find room for us within what he can manage. But extended visits still leave me paying for a separate home and wondering when we would actually have one together.
My tenancy has a few months left, so I’m not asking to move in tomorrow. What I had hoped for was the possibility of living together in the reasonably near future. If he buys somewhere we cannot share, I’m afraid that possibility could disappear for years. He says he’s happy with things as they are. I’m happy with him, but I don’t feel the same way about the prospect of keeping two homes for several more years.
He knows I want to live together. I’ve told him I’m disappointed that we may have to carry on separately. What I haven’t made clear is how much that could change my willingness to stay. Saying it before he makes an offer feels uncomfortably close to putting our relationship on the scales beside the house. Keeping it to myself would leave him making a major decision without knowing what it could mean for us.
I want him to find a home he loves. I also don’t want to spend years waiting for a shared life that may never become possible. He hasn’t made an offer yet, and I’m trying to find the words to tell him both.
