My boyfriend reached out to another woman during a difficult stretch with his family, and kept it from me. The part I am struggling with is that we had already talked about her. He knew some of their earlier interactions had made me uncomfortable. When he needed support, he contacted her anyway, without telling me.
I am 22, he is 24, and we have been together for a year and a half. Most of that time has been good. That matters to me now, because I am trying to make sense of something painful inside a relationship I still want. I am not looking for a way out. Neither is he.
His family situation had left him stressed and overwhelmed, with little support to lean on. I can understand needing someone to talk to. I do not expect being his girlfriend to make me the only person he can turn to, or to mean that every friendship needs my permission. I had never asked him to stop being friends with this woman.
What I had done was tell him that certain things between them bothered me. That conversation was supposed to mean we understood where the sensitive ground was. Instead, he made a choice involving the very person we had discussed, and I was left outside it. The earlier conversation now feels unfinished in a way I had not realized it was.
There was no affair. I am not describing a hidden romance, either. I want to be precise about that, because calling this cheating would turn it into a different story. But knowing what did not happen has not restored what I thought we had: the confidence that something important would not be deliberately kept from me.
Since then, I have felt hurt and on edge. An explanation for why he needed support does not quite answer why I could not know who he was getting it from. His difficult circumstances matter, and so does the fact that he already knew how I felt. I am trying to hold both without letting one erase the other.
We both want to repair this. What I cannot work out yet is what that looks like in ordinary life. Transparency sounds reassuring until I try to imagine the details. Would we agree to mention contact with someone we have already discussed? Would we need a clearer conversation about what crossed a line before? Those are possibilities I am trying to understand, not agreements we have already made.
I do not want to become the person who checks every interaction or expects a report on every conversation. That would give me a job I never wanted and leave him feeling managed. At the same time, simply deciding to trust him again feels like asking myself to skip the part we still need to work through. I want his accountability to have a shape we can both recognize.
For now, we are still together, still committed to trying. What I want to talk through is the ground rules we have not yet found: enough openness for me to feel secure again, and enough room for him to have friendships without our relationship becoming a system of permission.
