I got to my boyfriend’s place early and found him crying. He wiped his face, told me he was tired, and asked whether I’d eaten. Even then, with me standing in front of him and his face still wet, he was checking on me.
We’ve been together for almost a year. I’m 22 and he’s 23, and I’ve always thought he was unusually considerate. He has never raised his voice at me. When something bothers him, he seems more concerned about what it means for me than about what he needs. Until last night, I mostly understood that as being lucky in love.
At first, he kept insisting nothing was wrong. I got scared, then angry. I hadn’t seen him cry before, and I couldn’t understand why he was trying to look after me instead of telling me what had happened. I didn’t mean to turn his distress into something else he had to manage.
Eventually, he told me I’d seemed distant. For the past couple of weeks, I’d been busy and taking longer to reply. To me, that was all it was: a busy stretch. I hadn’t realized he was reading those gaps as a possible sign that I was leaving.
I knew he’d had two previous relationships. I hadn’t asked much about either. That night, he told me his first girlfriend had cheated on him. After a year together, his second had moved on to someone else within two weeks. Now he was wondering whether he was about to be replaced again.
He said opening up was difficult. Then he apologized for bringing his past into our relationship. He was telling me something painful about himself, and he was the one saying sorry. When I started crying, he told me not to blame myself.
I keep thinking about all the little things he remembers I dislike. I’d seen that attentiveness as affection, and it may be exactly that. But now I’m also wondering how often he puts his own preferences aside because he’s worried about disappointing me. I don’t know where being thoughtful ends and being afraid to ask for anything begins.
That uncertainty is what makes this feel so different from simply discovering something about an ex. I thought I knew how he was doing because he was kind, careful, and apparently okay. I hadn’t understood how much effort being okay might be taking him. After almost a year together, there’s a part of him I’m only just meeting.
He asked for some time, and we’re going to talk later. He’s at work now. I imagine him getting through the day without letting anyone notice, though I don’t know what his day actually looks like. I’m afraid of choosing the wrong words when we speak, or making him feel he has to reassure me again. For now, he has asked for time. Our conversation is still ahead of us.
