I’ve met a man who makes me want to stay around him. We get along easily, and I feel seen in a way I’ve been missing. He’s also 35, starting over financially, with a student loan and a new career ahead of him that doesn’t pay well. I’m drawn to the warmth between us, but I’m scared of getting further into it.
I’m 35 too. I grew up without much, in a family that looked at people with money and wished we had their lives. Financial stability became something I wanted for myself long before this man came along. I have savings, make a decent income, and bought a small place that I’m paying off. Those things matter to me because I know what it feels like to lack them.
My idea of a good life isn’t designer bags or an expensive car. I enjoy nature and experiences. But I do want a family, and I’d like a partner financially secure enough that I could stop working, or at least have that choice. That’s a bigger wish than wanting someone who can cover dinner. I want room to step back without our whole life becoming a struggle.
My last relationship was with a wealthy man. He was nice, but he was reluctant to spend money on me, and that withholding seemed to extend to his emotions. We didn’t have the closeness I wanted. Being with someone who had money didn’t make me feel cared for. I’m wary of assuming a bank balance tells me how generous a partner will be.
This new man has taken a very different path. He spent time on a spiritual journey, wasn’t working for a while, and then started studying for a career he cares about. He used to work in construction, but he hasn’t arrived at this point with a financial cushion from those years. He’s building from scratch. I can understand wanting work that means something to him and still worry about what that would mean for a life together.
There’s another awkward part: I don’t find him especially physically attractive. What keeps pulling me toward him is how well we connect. His warmth reaches something in me that has felt neglected for a long time. I want to explore that emotional closeness, though I can’t yet say how it would translate into a relationship. Feeling understood has made me curious; it hasn’t answered everything else.
I’m also in the early stages of getting to know a man with a successful business. We get along reasonably well, although I’m not sure there’s the same depth. It’s too soon to know either man as a partner. Still, I can feel myself comparing them before either possibility has had much time to become anything.
I don’t want to spend the rest of my life pushing hard just to feel comfortable. That fear is there even with the savings and home I’ve worked for. For now, the man whose company I’m eager for is also the one I’m hesitant to get closer to.
