My girlfriend told me she had hooked up with a guy from work the previous week. Before she said it, she warned me that she didn’t think I would ever forgive her. I asked for more details. That was when a single encounter became a month I hadn’t known anything about.
They had been talking during their breaks at work, day after day. Eventually he asked her out, she accepted, and they became physically involved. Those are the details she admitted. I don’t know every conversation they had, but I know enough to be troubled by the word she chose for the whole thing: hookup.
To me, that makes it sound like one isolated event. What I keep thinking about is everything that came before it. The growing familiarity. The invitation. Saying yes. There was time between meeting him and sleeping with him, and throughout that time we were still together. I was living in a relationship without knowing what was happening inside it.
I’ve known her since 2022. Until this confession, she was someone I loved. Now even thinking about her brings up anger and disgust, and the speed of that change is hard to take in. I don’t know how to look back at our time together while carrying this new information.
I’m finished with the relationship. I’ve decided to cut contact and block her wherever I can. There’s no part of me trying to work out how we might stay together. That decision is much clearer than anything I feel afterward. Knowing I don’t want her back hasn’t stopped me from feeling shattered.
This has happened to me before. My very first relationship ended with cheating too, years ago. She knew that story. When we got together, I told her plainly that she could leave whenever she wanted, but cheating was something I couldn’t accept. I wasn’t asking for a promise that she would never change her mind about me. I wanted her to end our relationship before starting something with someone else.
That is part of what makes this so painful. I had already explained the boundary and why it mattered. She didn’t have to guess. Now an experience I thought belonged to my past has become something I’m dealing with again, with a different person I trusted.
I can’t tell whether the anger or the hurt is going to be louder over the coming weeks. Right now they’re both here. Part of me wants distance from anything connected to her; another part is still catching up with the confession.
I’ve made the decision about contact. What I haven’t worked out is how to get through the next few weeks without giving this every available part of my life. I don’t want the relationship back. I just don’t yet know what my days are going to feel like without it.
