He Hid His Girlfriend for Two Years. Now We Text About Work.

HotWife Diaries, November 2026

A week after I told him never to contact me again, he messaged me for a password to an account we shared. Then came another reason to talk: he said he had been fired and wanted help finding work. We had just had an awful fight about the girlfriend he had never told me about. Somehow, we were already discussing job leads.

For two years, this man had been one of the closest people in my life. I’m 22; he’s a year older. We talked constantly, helped each other with our careers, worked on projects, and spent late nights unloading whatever was bothering us. He became the person I relied on most. That closeness didn’t arrive all at once, which probably made it easier to accept without stopping to ask what it was.

There was flirting. There were memes. There were conversations that felt more emotionally intimate than the friendship label suggested. I felt we kept crossing boundaries people normally reserve for a partner. I wasn’t describing a straightforward work friendship, even if work was one of the things that brought us together.

Then mutual friends told me he had a girlfriend. He had been with her the entire time. In two years of all that talking, he had never mentioned her once.

I hadn’t assumed every close male friend owed me a relationship. What shook me was finding out that such a basic fact about his life had been missing from mine. Knowing he had a girlfriend would have given me a very different understanding of the flirting and the emotional closeness. Instead, I learned about her from other people, after I had already become deeply attached to having him around.

I confronted him about keeping her hidden and about the boundaries we had crossed. It went badly. We said horrible things, challenged each other’s intentions, and ended up in an ugly fight. I told him not to contact me again. At that point, I meant to stop talking to him.

The password request came a week later. When he followed it with the news about losing his job, I felt guilty about refusing to help. He had done a lot for my career. That history was real, too, and I couldn’t neatly separate the man who had supported me from the man who had withheld something so important. I helped him look for work.

Now we text every day again. The flirting has stopped, and so have the memes. We stick to careers and tech. On the surface, the change is easy to point to: the messages have different content. But we never dealt with the fight or the secret that caused it. There hasn’t been an apology or a conversation that settled anything.

I don’t know whether a strictly professional friendship is possible between us. Keeping it would mean trusting the new boundary while the old breach of trust is still unresolved; ending it would mean losing someone whose help mattered to me. What makes me uncomfortable is how little it took to return to daily contact. I told him to stay out of my life, helped him when he needed it, and now we’re talking about work as though the hardest conversation between us has already happened.
