I want to marry my partner. I love him, I can see a whole future with him, and making our relationship official makes sense to me. Then I get to the word “wife,” and something in me pulls back. It is a strange place to get stuck when the person I would be marrying is the part I feel good about.
I am comfortable calling myself a woman. Girlfriend feels fine, and so does partner. Those words seem to describe me or the relationship I already have. Wife feels different. I hear it and feel as though I am being handed a role along with a name, with expectations attached that I never remember agreeing to.
Even if our life together carried on exactly as it is, I think the word would still bother me. I do not have to imagine him changing for this to feel strange. That makes the discomfort harder to explain: I am reacting to what the title means to me, rather than to a change I know is coming.
There are reasons I actively want marriage, beyond loving the person. It makes financial sense for us. I want to be his family in a legal sense, too. That matters to me; it is not just an administrative detail I am willing to tolerate for the relationship. I want that recognition. I just do not feel the same warmth toward the words that usually come with it.
I also cannot neatly explain this through my upbringing. I did not grow up surrounded by women whose entire lives revolved around being traditional wives. The families I knew had two working parents. There is no obvious contrast between a restricted life I watched and an independent one I am trying to protect. My reaction has managed to arrive without that convenient explanation.
And I do not want to make somebody else’s happiness sound suspect. If a woman loves being a wife, I am not sitting here thinking she has misunderstood her own life. I can accept that the word feels romantic and right to her. What feels awkward is the idea that I should share that feeling because I love a man enough to marry him.
“Husband” gives me some of the same unease. It is the pair of titles, the sense of stepping into a gendered arrangement, that makes me hesitate. I do not know how to separate the relationship I want from the meanings I hear in those names. I would like to be legally his family. I am still uncomfortable imagining myself introduced as his wife.
