We Moved Past Our Awkward Start. Our Friends Won’t Let It Go

HotWife Diaries, November 2026November 2026

When I challenged a friend about another comment on how my girlfriend and I got together, I hoped we could finally leave it alone. Instead, she felt awkward about being challenged, explained the situation to other friends, and the subject started making the rounds again. My attempt to end one conversation had apparently given it a wider audience.

We’re both 22, and we’ve been together for ten months. Before that, she had a crush on me. One night, after drinking, she admitted how she felt. I had been telling people I didn’t like her, even though I did. There isn’t a flattering explanation for that. I was afraid to admit my feelings, and she was the one left exposed by it.

I understand why that beginning bothered people. From the outside, it could look like she had put herself out there for someone who wasn’t interested. I’m not asking anyone to remember it as a lovely romantic moment. I know I handled my part badly, and pretending otherwise would mean ignoring what she actually experienced.

But she and I have talked about it properly. We’ve worked through it and decided to move forward together. We’re happy now. That doesn’t erase the beginning; it means something has happened since. Ten months of being a couple ought to be part of the story people tell about us, too.

For my friends, though, the start still seems to be the part that needs discussing. Sometimes it’s a passing remark. Sometimes it becomes a whole conversation. The friend I recently challenged said she was concerned because of how things began. I can understand concern. What’s harder to understand is what another retelling is supposed to do for either of us.

My girlfriend is the person paying for these reminders. She doesn’t want to keep returning to the night I said I didn’t like her. We’ve already dealt with that between us, yet it keeps turning up through people around us. She’s also starting to feel that my friends see our relationship negatively, as though our present happiness counts for less than the uncomfortable opening.

That’s the part I can’t shrug off as friends being friends. I caused the original hurt. Now, when other people revisit it, she has to hear it again. I don’t want my wish to avoid an awkward conversation to become another reason she’s left uncomfortable.

I’ve been considering one message to our group chat: acknowledge that the start wasn’t great, explain that we’ve worked through it, and ask everyone to stop bringing it up because it’s affecting us. I wouldn’t be announcing that nobody can ever have a concern. I’d be asking them to stop circulating the same one after the two people involved have already talked it through.

A single message might save me from explaining this separately to ten different people, only for those explanations to travel around the group. It might also make an already awkward subject feel like an official announcement. I can picture trying to clear the air and somehow creating the next thing everyone needs to discuss.

So the message is still something I’m considering. I want to say enough that my girlfriend no longer has to sit through our beginning being picked apart. I’m less certain how to ask a group to move on without giving it another reason to keep talking.
