We were at the same concert, somewhere in separate groups, and I couldn't get her to meet me. Two weeks earlier, we'd spent another concert kissing and talking for hours. Now, when I suggested we should find each other, she left it to fate. I tried to turn that into an actual plan. She didn't answer, and we never crossed paths.
I'm 23, and so is she. We'd met about two months before, and the beginning had felt unusually easy. I've dated other women, but I hadn't felt this kind of connection. She wasn't someone whose interest I had to guess at. She started conversations, told me I was distracting her at work, and made it clear she wanted me.
We went on several dates and had sex. The chemistry was there, along with enough affection that I was starting to let myself believe this could become something. That hope came from how we were together, not just from what appeared on my phone.
That first concert felt like the strongest confirmation. We spent hours close to each other, kissing, talking, being openly affectionate. I said some romantic things. From her response, I thought she'd liked hearing them. Afterward, she thanked me by text, wanted me to get home safely, and ranked the concert among the five best she'd ever attended. I came away thinking we'd had our best night yet.
Then the contact changed. Replies that had once come readily started taking four or five hours. There was less affection in the messages. Waiting a few hours isn't much by itself, but it felt different against the attention she'd been giving me. We'd vaguely talked about meeting that Thursday. Neither of us followed up, so we didn't see each other.
It would be easier to understand if she'd simply stopped flirting. She hasn't. Sometimes she still starts a conversation or brings up a romantic moment we shared. Recently, she mentioned seeing me the following weekend and even taking a trip together. Those are hopeful things to hear from someone whose everyday contact has begun to feel less certain. I don't know how much weight to give them when we can't turn being at the same concert into a brief meeting.
I haven't stayed consistent either. Frustrated with her replies, I pulled back and once left her message unanswered for a full day. I wanted more contact while deliberately giving her less of it. That doesn't tell me why she changed, but it does mean the distance between us isn't entirely something I'm watching from the outside.
I keep wondering whether she's losing interest, whether my romantic comments felt too intense, or whether we've let the connection drift by not seeing each other. I can't establish any of those from the messages. The one thing I'm sure of is that I was falling for her, and the shift has hurt more than I expected after two months.
Now I'm unsure whether to reach out again. Asking directly could mean hearing that she doesn't want this to continue. Staying quiet would spare me that conversation, but leave me without knowing whether there's still a date to make. The last time I tried to see her, we were already in the same place. My follow-up was the message she never answered.
