Over the summer, I went to dinner with a man who had been one of my regulars while I was briefly bartending. He was much older than the men I usually noticed. What stayed with me wasn't just the silver hair. It was how interested he seemed in hearing what I had to say.
I'm 28. Until recently, the men I found attractive were generally around my age, with about ten years older being the outer edge of what appealed to me. Now I'm noticing men old enough to be my father, sometimes older. That feels like a fairly substantial revision to what I thought my type was.
The man from the bar was handsome, certainly. But at dinner he also gave me compliments that felt tasteful, listened to me, and behaved like a gentleman. I felt treated with care rather than sized up. There was no sexual pushiness, no sense that he needed to turn the conversation into something lustful. I found that incredibly attractive.
Being attracted to him and appreciating the absence of sexual pressure weren't contradictory. I could enjoy a man's attention without feeling that I had to respond to a sexual advance. His attention didn't come with a demand to make the evening sexual.
I think that's where this shift started. I don't have a longer history with him to offer, or a neat account of what happened next. What I have is one dinner that felt refreshing enough to change which men started catching my eye afterward.
That change has also made my patience with men my own age noticeably shorter. When I start talking to someone and sense emotional immaturity, an immediate fixation on sex, or contempt for women, I lose interest. After that dinner, the contrast is harder to ignore. Being close to my age no longer feels like much of a recommendation on its own.
It's tempting to bundle everything I liked about that evening under the heading of age. He was older, he was attentive, and I came away impressed. Those facts arrived together. They don't tell me how he'd behave in a relationship, or mean every older man would make me feel the same way. I know perfectly well that some wouldn't.
Still, the attraction itself is real. I can recognize that one man's manners aren't a guarantee about an entire age group and also admit that gray hair has become considerably more interesting to me. I don't need to pretend the physical part disappeared just because the way he treated me mattered.
The men catching my eye now can be older than my father. That still surprises me. I hadn't expected a dinner with one of my regulars to make my old ten-year limit feel so far away.
