She fell asleep at my apartment, woke up, and told me I should feel good about the fact that she was comfortable enough to do that. I did feel good. I was also still trying to figure out whether I could get past the fact that she was about five inches taller than me.
We’d matched on a dating app after she liked me first. I thought she was cute, though not someone I’d normally have picked in person. I liked her back “for the plot,” as one does when making carefully considered decisions on an app. Her height gave me pause: I’m 5'10", and I’d usually picture myself with someone closer to my size. Still, I decided to see what happened.
She asked if she could come over to smoke and hang out. I said yes, knowing I wasn’t going to pursue sex just because the invitation included coming over. We smoked, then went out to eat. She’d never been to the restaurant, and it was fun watching her enjoy whatever she wanted to order. Her excitement made me happy. We talked easily and laughed a lot.
Back at my place, we watched movies. She was hesitant about cuddling at first, so I didn’t push it. Later she wanted to, and I was glad to. At some point, after drinking and smoking, she fell asleep. When she woke up, she said she felt comfortable enough around me to do that. It was a nice thing to hear—not exactly a dramatic declaration, but more than a review of the movie selection.
When it was time for her to leave, I called her an Uber and walked her downstairs. She said she’d had a really good time, wanted to hang out again, and kissed me on the cheek. She’s been texting me since, and I get the feeling she genuinely likes me.
Somewhere during the evening, my first impression shifted. I’d started out thinking she was cute but not quite my usual type. Now I think she’s adorable, and I’m starting to feel something. The height difference hasn’t disappeared; it’s still the part I keep circling back to when I imagine actually courting her.
That hesitation feels a little awkward because I’m a loverboy by nature. I can imagine pouring a lot into someone I care about, and I don’t want to act more certain than I am. At the same time, there’s a part of me that thinks a Gomez and Morticia situation could be pretty fun. I came into the date treating it as a small experiment. I left with a woman I like, a cheek kiss, and one very specific question still taking up space in my head.
